Opie the Brave: A New Beginning for a Gentle Soul

At Hartland Oaks, we believe every animal deserves a second chance—and sometimes, even a third. Meet Opie, our 18-year-young rescue donkey, who’s proving daily that healing begins with love, patience, and a whole lot of ear scratches.

Opie came to us from an animal cruelty case. The specifics of his past are something we don’t dwell on—what matters is where he’s going, not where he’s been. What we do know is that despite everything, Opie still trusts. He still seeks out connection. And he still nickers softly when someone walks by, hoping for a kind hand and a warm word.

This sweet, halter-broke gentleman was severely overweight when he arrived, tipping the scales far beyond what’s healthy for a donkey. Thanks to proper nutrition and a safe, structured environment, Opie has already lost 40 pounds. His hooves have been trimmed, though he still walks with a slight awkwardness—likely the lingering echo of years without proper care. He also has two visible sarcoids (benign skin tumors), but his vet isn’t concerned. They’re harmless reminders that even scars can be worn with quiet strength.

Opie’s pen sits in the heart of our sanctuary, where he’s surrounded by gentle activity and constant companionship. He shares a fenceline with curious goats, watchful chickens, and our Great Pyrenees guardians who keeps a steady, calming presence by his side. Our other donkeys and horses stop by daily for friendly sniffs and soft brays, offering their own version of a welcome committee.

But not everyone is thrilled with Opie’s good looks. Our resident micro jack is still working through some “big donkey” insecurities. Let’s just say... there’s a bit of macho posturing from across the fence. We’re keeping an eye on it, but honestly, who can blame him? Opie is quite the charmer.

What touches us most is Opie’s resilience. Despite the neglect, despite the weight and discomfort, despite the unknowns—he chooses to trust. He leans in for affection. He seeks connection. And now, he has something else to look forward to: a forever home. Opie will soon be joining a sweet 15-year-old jenny, where he’ll live out the rest of his days surrounded by companionship and care.

Until then, we’re giving him all the love, snacks (in moderation!), and sun-soaked afternoons he deserves. Opie is a symbol of why Hartland Oaks exists—not just to rescue, but to restore. Not just to shelter, but to celebrate.

Welcome home, Opie. You're safe now. You're seen. And you are so very loved.
